Mbox is a file format used for storing e-mail messages. It consists of multiple files with the same filename and different extensions, such as .eml or .mbox. EML stands for “extensible message format” and it is designed to be platform-independent. MBOX is similar to an email folder that stores all emails together in a single file.

  1. Open the folder where you store your emails. In Windows, this is usually located at “C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Thunderbird”, where username refers to your computer account name. In Mac OS X, this is stored at “~/Library/Thunderbird”.

The username depends on how your computer is set up.

  1. Click the menu button and select ImportExportTools, then click Choose File…. The Thunderbird Preferences window should appear. At the bottom of the window under “Import & Export”, select Import mail and newsgroups from the dropdown menu, then click Select File… once it becomes active. Navigate to where you stored your mbox file, select it and click Open to import the contents of your Mbox file into Thunderbird.

If you have an EML file, you should be able to simply open the file directly in Thunderbird instead of first importing it as a .mbox file. Mbox files are generally used for importing email messages into third-party email clients, whereas EML files are generally used to forward mail messages in the same format they were received.

If you want to import more than one mbox file at once, look for the “Import mail and newsgroups” option again. Check the boxes next to each file you want to import, then click Select File… and choose the destination folder where you’d like your emails imported into Thunderbird. If any of these files contains an invalid email address, this will immediately become apparent as any email messages added to the file at a later stage won’t be able to be imported.

You can also use Mozilla Thunderbird as your email client if you need help converting from EML to MBOX format or from MBOX to EML format. It is a free and open-source email client that you can use to send or receive email messages.
